Office news
Price changes:
Effective Nov 15, prices for all acupuncture treatments will increase by $5 per treatment. Also, we will offer the following discount: $20 off every 5th treatment. (Applies to regularly priced acupuncture treatments only)
Specials!
To make the price change easier to adjust to, I am selling gift certificates at the current price through November 15. You may buy them at the current price and use them for as long as you like.
Also, through November and December, facial acupuncture sessions are only $80 (regularly $130 after November 15). A facial acupuncture session includes a consultation, acupuncture specifically for beauty enhancement as well as for general health, and a foot shiatsu session. The total session is 90 minutes long. In addition to enhancing facial tone and minimizing wrinkles, facial acupuncture is great for seasonal allergy symptoms and uses the same points used for emotional issues and to improve mental concentration. Make your appointment today!
NAET in Sandston!
Kristen Couture is now in my Sandston office on Tuesdays. She is an NAET practitioner, which treats allergies and the health problems with result from those allergies (and almost any health or emotional issue can be affected by a form of allergy). To reach her, call (804) 201-1372.
New website
I've finally gotten the new website up and running. There are still many things to add, but you can see it at www.greenacuclinic.com . Check out my new blog, and look out for health articles in the future.
Texting
I know it is sometimes hard to get me on the phone. If you want to send a text message to my phone, you can send it to either 804-683-2979 or 757-561-1258. Because it is faster, I can reply to texts and emails even when I only have a few moments between appointments. Of course, you may still use those numbers for phone calls as well. I'm always glad to hear from you!

Aromatherapy and Icky Germs
With everyone worried about viruses this season, I suggest using essential oils to offer an extra layer of virus and germ-fighting protection. I am developing room sprays and hand cleaner using essential oils to keep handy for use when in a public place. Email or check the website for more information.
In the meantime, here are the oils I reach for when I will be out in public around possibly sick people:
*Tea Tree: Probably the most famous of the "germ fighter" oils, tea tree has studies showing it is one of the best disinfecting oils around. Gentle enough to use undiluted, I still prefer to add a little water or oil when I use it topically.
*Ravensara: A fairly new oil for me, it is considered excellent for topical use on shingles and excellent for the immune system. I will pass on more specific info as my experience with it increases.
*Eucalyptus: Great for clogged sinuses. Add a little bit to a room diffuser, or mix some in some coconut or olive oil and rub just below your nose (NOT in your nose-it will burn delicate tissue).
*Peppermint: Must be diluted for topical use, but one of the most pleasant smelling oils for opening the lungs. Keep some in a bowl of hot water to scent a room.
Remember, essential oils are wonderful, but very powerful. Always start with small amounts of oil diluted in oil or water for any use, and if you have questions, call a trained aromatherapist, especially if you are pregnant or have unusually sensitive skin .

Herb Corner
This time of year, everyone wants the best immune system possible. Here are the formulas we use most commonly in Chinese Medicine:
Jadescreen Formula and Ren Shen Bai Du Wan-both are great for increasing your immune system qi, or energy. Jadescreen is especially good for allergies.
Gan mao ling, Yin Qiao, and Ban Lan Gen are good for stopping a cold in its tracks or lessening its severity. Ban Lan Gen was used in China as a special remedy for the SARS outbreak.
Pe min kan wan is the best formula for most people with allergies.
There are also great things you can do to improve your health and immune system:
1.Get plenty of rest and manage stress well. These two simple tips will make any health problem better, but are especially good for keeping your immune system strong.
2.Wear warm clothes, especially a scarf. When I first started my acupuncturist studies, I wondered how much it could benefit me to simply wear a scarf. At the time, I caught at least one cold a season, and they usually lasted for weeks. As soon as I started wearing a scarf, especially on windy days, I cut the colds I caught by at least 75%. Especially when the weather is turning colder, dress a little more warmly than you think you need to. Your body reacts to the autumn and winter by craving extra warmth, even when the thermometer shows warm temperatures.
3.Eat warm food. I know I sound like a broken record with this tip, but it works. A strong digestion is a major key to a strong immune system, and warm food is THE best thing to do food-wise for good digestion. Even if you crave cold foods, eating warm foods for a couple of weeks will improve your health in some way-whether it gives you more energy, better sleep, less pain, or smoother digestion.
4.Eat natural food. I'm always surprised how many people think they "only eat natural stuff" and then eat canned soups full of MSG, use artificial sweeteners (Splenda, Nutrasweet, etc.), or buy low-fat foods full of sugar and additives to give the food the texture it should have from fat. It is always better to eat something healthy and natural instead of something processed. Your body sees processed food as odd and foreign, and your immune system wastes energy trying to decide whether the processed cheese spread or high-fructose corn syrup is friend or foe. Choose natural foods whenever possible.
Tea Tasting Open House!
I will have a tea tasting in my Sandston office on Friday, November 20thfrom 1pm to 3:30pm. Come by to try tea, ask questions about Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, herbs, or tea. There will be door prizes for free tins of tea, and a drawing for a free acupuncture treatment! Bring your friends!
That's it for this issue. Hope to see you soon!
